On Saturday, College Plaza in Selden will be the home to Duck Donuts‘ second Long Island location.
The North Carolina-based donut shop is launching at 9 a.m. in a 1650-square-foot location that previously held a card store and before that a Quiznos.
The franchise owners — Smithtown couple Veronica and Anthony Bencivenga — eyed expansion after opening New York state’s first location in 2018 on Veterans Memorial Highway in Hauppauge.
“My family and I are very excited to be able to open this second location despite COVID,” Veronica told GreaterPortJeff this week.
For the initiated, Duck Donuts is a made-to-order donut shop. Like a Chipotle or Five Guys, there’s an assembly line ordering system where patrons can choose custom toppings and fillings for their freshly-made donuts.
“If you are in the mood for fresh, custom, and that ‘wow factor,’ come here for our donuts,” said Veronica.
Unlike 2018, the opening for this location been very much different for the Bencivengas.
“It was touch-and-go for a while,” said Veronica, a Buffalo native. “But my family and I are very excited to be able to open this second location despite COVID.”
To maintain safety protocols, the donut shop added sanitation stations, social distancing markers, as well as making its coffee island moveable to prevent crowding.
To introduce themselves to their new Selden neighbors, Duck Donuts held several pop-up events over the last few months in College Plaza.
“It worked out very well,” said Veronica, who added it was a safe way to supply her product to their customers. “There was a lot of positivity.”
That’s the reason the couple chose Selden for its new spot: the neighbors.
“We have done fundraising with the Middle Country Public Library and the local cheerleading teams,” said Veronica. “That community-feel is important to us.”
After its opening, Duck Donuts’ hours of operations will be Sunday-Monday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m, and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. the rest of the week.
