The weeks-long effort to raise money to help Port Jeff restaurants send food to local hospital workers battling COVID-19 has come to an end.

In total, Greater Long Island Media Group, publishers of greaterportjeff.com, in partnership with the Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce, helped raise nearly $22,500.

Almost $10,000 ($9,880) was raised by donations from members of the public through gofundme.com. Another $12,500 was donated by Teachers Federal Credit Union ($5,000) and Suffolk Federal Credit Union ($7,500) — after the credit unions caught word of the efforts.

The money was distributed to a list of participating restaurants (see below) by the chamber. The restaurant owners used the money to pay for the food and delivery to Mather and St. Charles hospitals.

“The success of this fundraiser is only a testament of the generosity of our community, wanting to help those who have placed their own health at risk, providing urgent medical services to those in extreme need,” said the chamber’s director of operations, Barbara Ransome. “We are extremely grateful and humble to have played any role in this important struggle!”

The donations provided a steady stream of locally prepared food for about a month.

The extra business also helped the struggling restaurants that have been mostly shut down to the state COVID-19 containment measures.

PJ Lobster House was among the participating restaurants.

“This definitely helps turn product and helps with a few extra dollars to pay the employees to keep going,” owner James Luciano told GreaterPortJeff.com last month. “If everybody gets a little bit, it keeps the flow going.”

“On behalf of the Mather Hospital family I’d like to thank Greater Long Island, the Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce and all those who contributed for the many meals that have been sent to our frontline staff,” said Kenneth Roberts, president at Mather Hospital.

“Your support during this difficult time is greatly appreciated.”
