Last year, the Brookhaven Town Polar Plunge at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai raised $140,000 for athletes who participate in Special Olympics New York.

Now in its 8th annual year, the event organizers hope to surpass its success this Saturday.

“The community and the town of Brookhaven have supported this event so incredibly,” said Special Olympics New York’s director of development Jennifer Cantone, who saw nearly 1,000 plungers take a dip in the freezing waters last year.

Registration will begin at 9 a.m. with the plunging beginning at noon.

There is no fee to plunge, but those who fundraise will be awarded with prizes after reaching certain incentives.

If dipping into the frigid waters isn’t for you, you can still support the event by enjoying music by local radio stations while eating food from various vendors.

“We are going to have a lot of fun displays,” added Cantone.
