Thousands lined the harborfront Saturday in Port Jefferson for the fourth annual Dragon Boat Race Festival, sponsored by the Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce.

A record 34 boats paddled across the harbor this year, with teams heading to Mayor Jeanne Garant Harborfront Park from as close as St. Charles Hospital to as far away as the NYPD.

The best time in the dash across the harbor (0:58:06) was achieved by Huaxia Dragon, a team from the LI School of ChineseClick here for a complete list of all teams.

Dragon boat racing is rooted in ancient Chinese tradition, and is a show of patriotism.

A company called High Five, which travels across the country to set up dragon boat races, helps organize the races. The chamber also teams up with Stony Brook University’s Confucius Institute to help attract Pan-Asian groups to the festival.
